House of Numst and Nuxalk Radio Project

We are very pleased with the award of the new House of Numst and Nuxalk Radio project for the ALKW Media Society, in Bella Coola, BC.  The House of Numst’ is regarded as the living embodiment of Nuxalk self-determination. The building design honours the House of Nusmata, which once stood on the shore of the Bella Coola River at the village of Q’umk’uts in 1846.

Given that almost all historic buildings in the territory have been lost, the House of Numst’ will be the foundation of Nuxalk cultural resurgence – a much needed centre for Nuxalk Nationhood, art, heritage and cultural practices.

The building will also contain an intergenerational language-learning hub by Nuxalk Radio, a well-established Nuxalk language radio broadcast company.  In addition to the Language-Learning Hub, the building will include a large meeting area for hereditary chiefs and elders, as well as being the new home of Nuxalk Radio, with on-air broadcast booth and equipment, radio tower, a professional recording studio, and support offices:
